Health Canada recognizes Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a source of resveratrol and yeast beta-glucan: a milestone for fermentation derived health ingredients

Lallemand Bio-Ingredients welcomes recent updates to Health Canada’s Natural Health Product monographs recognizing Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a source of trans-resveratrol and yeast beta-glucan. This regulatory development reinforces the growing recognition of fermentation-derived ingredients and highlights the potential of yeast biotechnology to deliver innovative, science-backed solutions for human health. The monograph updates also provide manufacturers with a clearer, more predictable
and more efficient pathway to license eligible natural health products containing fermentation derived trans-resveratrol or yeast beta-glucan in Canada.
For trans-resveratrol, the monograph update allows fermentation-derived trans-resveratrol from Saccharomyces cerevisiae to be licensed under Health Canada’s existing Antioxidant Monograph framework, including established antioxidant claims and conditions of use. In addition to recognizing Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a source of yeast beta-glucan, the updated monograph includes allowed health claims when used at the recommended dose:

  • Source of yeast beta-glucans with immunomodulating properties
  • Helps reduce the severity of symptoms of the common cold (e.g. sore throat, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, cough, runny nose) in adults prone to recurrent colds when taken as a preventative measure during winter months

The updated monograph provides a clear regulatory framework that supports the development, licensing, and commercialization of yeast beta-glucan products in Canada.
