Plant origin provides storytelling or sustainability, but not greater hydration efficacy. What determines functionality is the chemical form, concentration, solubility, osmolality, and exact formula,” states Morales.

Furthermore, sodium is facing consumer scrutiny; buyers will soon start looking at its quantity in the same way they currently analyze grams of protein. Why “Sugar-Free” Isn’t Always the Best Option

Although removing sugar is ideal for everyday hydration, Morales points out that in athletic performance, it remains an indispensable functional element in the vast majority of cases:

  • Context of Use: A zero-sugar formula is excellent for travel or a sedentary day; however, it can fall short during prolonged physical exertion as a comprehensive solution if the athlete needs to replenish fluids, sodium, and carbohydrates at the same time.

It is often assumed that a product labeled as a “sports drink” guarantees superior hydration. However, in the original BHI study, the evaluated sports drink did not show significantly higher fluid retention compared to water in hydrated, resting subjects when benchmarked against other tested beverages. This result reinforces that superior hydration cannot be attributed to every sports drink simply because it contains electrolytes. The ideal formula should actually be designed according to the consumption context, the duration of exertion, and expected fluid loss.

THE FUTURE: GLP-1 METABOLIC HYDRATION

The rise of GLP-1 receptor agonist drugs opens a new frontier in nutritional development. As appetite is drastically reduced, the risk of dehydration potentially increases if intake drops—for instance, from water-rich foods like summer fruits during the time of year when dehydration risk is highest. In this context, so-called “metabolic hydration” does not aim to enhance weight-loss effects, but rather to integrate fluids and electrolytes into a supervised nutritional strategy.

Format and Function: Not Everything Fits in a Stick Pack or a Gummy
